I cry at a lot of things, & a hell of a lot of films. But fewer films have broken me more than this:

Brokeback Mountain.

It is one of the most powerful, beautiful, important & heart wrenching films that made me cry for a record forty five minutes after it finished the first time I watched it.

It’s about two men who meet as sheep herders on Brokeback Mountain in the sixties & fall in love in a time & place where it was forbidden, & the journey through their lives.

It’s Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal as star crossed lovers Ennis & Jack & they really are at their some of their finest here in performances that earned each of them an oscar nomination. They’re so, so good at being the uncertain people in love & the guys juggling two lives. The supporting cast is amazing as well, & full of stupidly talented women. There’s Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway & Kate Mara amongst others, but all are superb.

It really is such a beautiful romance, & the way it’s told is gorgeous. They’re big name actors but the kind who are so good they’re still immediately convincing as the characters. The chemistry between Ledger & Gyllenhaal though is most incredible – these two amazing actors together is awe inspiring. Did you know that Heath almost broke Jake’s nose from kissing him too hard during filming this?

Because it’s two gay men in a Hollywood film, you already know somewhere deep inside that it’s not going to have a happy ending. But the whole film is so beautifully told leading up to it that it leaves such a lasting impact on you & the film industry, & gladly we are starting to move away from the whole “gay people can’t live happily ever after” trope in film & tv.

I love this film, even if watching it requires an entire tub of ice cream & a whole lot of tissues.
