Today marked a VERY special occasion – I watched my first Christmas film of the season!

There are almost as many films about Christmas as there have been actual Christmases surely; and I decided to weigh in on how good I think they actually are.

These are films where the theme is Christmas, not just the setting – so, sorry Die Hard fans but don’t get upset over this. I’m only including films that are indisputably Christmas films!

You’ll notice that there are a few films missing off this list, maybe even your favourites. Unfortunately in my near twenty two years of life I haven’t been able to get through them all, so drop me a comment or a tweet if there’s any I can’t go another DAY without seeing.

Here’s my take on the best and worst films about Christmas:

God Tier

These are the ones that are on such a level of brilliance that they have transcended to the heavens; just like the Angel Gabriel.

Home Alone

Love Actually

It’s a Wonderful Life

The Holiday

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Good Tier

Still a lot of fun, and still ones you’ll probably watch every Christmas.

The Snowman

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The Muppet’s Christmas Carol

Average Tier

Eh. These are okay – there’s nothing really wrong with them per say, they just aren’t the ones you’d be screaming with excitement to watch.

The Polar Express

A Christmas Carol

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

Jack Frost

Bad Tier

These are bad, but maybe in the best way? Regardless, they’re at the bottom of the barrel when choosing a festive film to watch.

Jingle All the Way

Four Christmases

Hell Tier

When I say hell, I mean the following films are just… utter trash. But that does NOT mean I don’t enjoy them.

Bad Santa

Holiday in Handcuffs

The Princess Switch

Where do you rank these films? I apologise now if I offended you for any of my placements, but please take it up with my parents for never showing me A Muppet’s Christmas Carol as a kid.

I made the mistake of not watching any Christmas films last year, and I’m making up for it this year – take a look at this list and see which one you need to re-watch.

Even if it’s just to remind yourself of how wrong I am.

  1. My ranking of A Christmas Carol is extremely high- it is my favorite Christmas movie (The George C Scott Version). I am 24 now, and it is a movie I grew up with- it is tradition to watch every Christmas holiday. It is not average in my rankings- much higher.

  2. Agree with most of your rankings (for the films I’ve seen), especially the God Tier! I haven’t seen the Holiday or Nightmare Before Christmas though so might give them a watch.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is also up there as one of my fave Christmas films, and I would recommend watching it if you haven’t already!
